The 50 Best Films of The 80s

There are plenty of good 80s movies to watch available on the majority of streaming platforms. The 80s was and still is arguably is the best decade for film. It spawned classics like E.T., Top Gun, Labyrinth and more!

Below you’ll find a list of the 50 greatest films from the 80s. I’ve decided on these films using review scores (which are accurate at the time of writing) from Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB and Letterboxd as well as box office records from the decade.

The films in this list are in chronological order.

The Shining (1980)

Stanley Kubrick’s best work by far. The Shining is by far one of the best horror films of all time. This Stephen King adaptation is set in Maine, they go to look after a hotel and slowly sends Jack Nicolson insane.

I experienced The Shining in the cinema for the first time after the COVID-19 pandemic when cinemas opened up for first time. The Shining is well worth experiencing in the cinema if you get the chance. Both the score and stakes feel higher on the big screen.

The Shining isn’t available on any streaming services, however, you can buy or rent it online.

9 to 5 (1980)

This film is a comedy starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. This phenomenal trio will provide an hour and fifty minutes of hilarity. The song 9 to 5 is loved by all and the film should be too.

IPC films produced this particular film, the company is owned by Jane Fonda, an activist and gay icon. If you’re in the mood for a relaxing feel-good time 9 to 5 is the film for you.

How does 9 to 5 score on review sites?

9 to 5 is available as a part of your Disney+ subscription.

Star Wars Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

The second instalment of the first released Star Wars trilogy was admittedly confusing to audiences at the time due to its timeline.

The Empire Strikes Back is regarded as one of the best in the franchise due to its storytelling and thrilling CGI for its time due to George Lucas having his own special effects company, getting his vision exactly right.

How does Star Wars Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back score on review sites?

Star Wars Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back is available on Disney+ to Stream.

Flash Gordon (1980)

Flash Gordon is a space opera for the ages. Flash Gordon performed really well in the United Kingdom, but not in other markets. Queen wrote the soundtrack for the film which is probably why it did so well in the UK.

Flash is camp in art style and suffers from lacklustre CGI compared to the other films in this list, however, it is still well worth the watch.

Blade Runner (1982)

Like Indiana Jones, Star Wars and Ghostbusters, Bladerunner has spawned numerous sequels and is a good 80s movie to watch. Harrison Ford is a titan of the film industry and stars in Blade Runner.

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

E.T. is the number 1 grossing film of the decade. According to Box Office Mojo over its lifetime E.T. has made $359,197,037. Spielberg make us care for Elliot and his Extra-Terrestrial friend and has created a lot of iconic scenes, the most famous is the one where they fly in front of the moon.

Interestingly, although the film was a huge success when the game released it was and still regarded as one of the worst games of all time with a lot of the games for the Atari system sent to landfill.

The NeverEnding Story (1984)

The NeverEnding Story is a children’s classic, it features adventure, mystery and relatively dark themes. Some of the main plot points wouldn’t make it into a children’s film now, it leans heavily on themes of unhappiness, depression and even suicide, although a lot of it is symbolism.

The most heart-wrenching scene happens near the end and makes me cry every time. If you’ve watched the film you’ll know. The NeverEnding Story’s theme song was featured at the end of Stranger Things S3 which bought it to a new generation’s attention.

Gremlins (1984)

One thing children in the 80s all remember is that you should never feed a Gremlin after midnight, never get one wet and never expose it to bright lights. Gremlins are (Not literally) Furbys evil cousins. They’re cute and cuddly as long as you follow the above rules.

Gremlins is a horror/comedy that created a cultural phenomenon all across the western world. As with a lot of the films from the 80s, Gremlins got a more serious horror remake in 2017 called ‘Gremlin’ which didn’t perform well at all.

There is a less serious more child friendly animated show called ‘Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai’ premiering in 2023, with the potential for 3rd film in the series if that performs well.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of the most famous horror films of all time. Wes Craven is one of the titans of horror, constantly making bone-chilling horror films, having also directed Scream, which we named as the top film of the 90s.

Freddy Kruger has undoubtedly featured in many nightmares, unfortunately, it has suffered from ‘remake fatigue’. The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has seen a total of nine films. Only two have been directed by Craven, the original and ‘New Nightmare’ (1994) but by that point it was too late.

Indiana Jones and the Temple Of Doom (1984)

The Temple of Doom is one of the highest-rated Indiana Jones films of all time. It features Indie and his friends (along with some other people) eating monkey brains. The biggest and most remembered part of the film is Indiana Jones being chased by the boulder with the amazing score by John Williams.

The idea of a booby-trapped temple was not new in the 80s, it had been done in the years before, however no one had done those special effects as well as Steven Spielberg and his team did.

The film had a modest budget and was directed by James Cameron. James had his ‘big break’ from terminator and has said he was inspired by the 1978 hit Halloween.

The plot of Terminator was very well thought out and the casting directors hit the nail on the head with the cast. This particular film is a heavyweight of the action sci-fi genre and is not to be missed.

Starts off strong with a set up of the era – location – plot – characters. The majority of the film is set in one room, the library. It’s very cleverly done and thought out.

The overall film feels very camp overall, which suits the time very well. The Breakfast Club is still relevant to today’s time with complex themes and motifs.

The acting in this film is phenomenal and wasn’t snubbed, however, it wasn’t nominated for many awards. The only award it won was a MTV movie award in 2005, 20 years later than it deserved.

Other than the iconic lift near the end of the film the other famous thing to come out of Dirty Dancing is of course the quote “Nobody puts baby in the corner.”

Dirty Dancing had a remake in 2017 that suffered from bad reviews, honestly, you can’t improve on perfection. If you’re going to watch any version of Dirty Dancing it should be the original.
